Quirigua's famous carved stones

Quirigua is a park filled with Mayan carved stone sculptures. Some stones represent animals, usually ones that Mayans deemed sacred, and others are very high stone tablets, some up to 12 meters high. The park is close to the border with Honduras.

One of the stones that represents a toad.

A close-up of the intricate carvings.

A carved stone with the image of a Mayan king with a beard, which is an unusual portrayal since most Mayans did not have facial hair.
