The sacred Laguna Chicabal

Close to Xela, in the West of Guatemala, you can find the Laguna Chicabal which is sacred to the Mayans. Supposedly it is enchanted and anyone who swims or fishes in it dies.

View from above - Laguna Chicabal. You have to walk down over 600 steps to get down to the actual lagoon.

Mayan offerings that you can see along the shore of the lagoon.

For some mysterious reason, fog comes over the lagoon every day almost exactly at noon. It sets in very quickly and all of a sudden you cannot see anything anymore.

A beautiful view of volcanos on the way to the lagoon.
